Just as quick as my eyes closed they opened. It was 4:50 too early AM but I was eager to see the truth for myself. I first walked a few feet down to the Bay to peep the damage from the Toxic Oil and Tar Spew. To my surprise the Bay's beaches were rather clean. Off in the distance I noticed the oil booms and skimmers. From the looks of it their efforts seem to be doing as good as job as possible.
After exploring for a few more minutes I jumped on my VUE Mobile Device and had a morning briefing with Dave Peters. It was really cool to be able to share what I was seeing with my partner and close friend. I felt like I was in paradise until Dave asked to see the beaches on the Gulf side. Off to the beach access where we ran into the clean up worker the night before.
Upon arriving to the beach access I ran into a traffic jam of bulldozers and dump trucks. The dump trucks were wrapping it up for the night while the herd of clean up workers invaded the beaches. It was a sight to see. A bunch of safety yellow vest and white suits. Men and women dressed to attack toxic waste while a sign reads "Swim At Your Own Risk". My hopes were very high thinking that something positive is being done. I quickly discovered that these workers were there only to sit around and occasionally pick up a tar ball that lands on the beach. Out of 20 workers only 3-5 would work at a time. When I asked why the rest of them sat there they stated the were on break. Break!? They just got there! Gregg Hall walks up to join me and shouts out "That's only the start of it". Gregg quickly reached down in the sand and dug about 1ft to show me a hand full of sand covered in oil. WoW! So the oil and tar is still on the beach just covered up with imported sand. How is that a clean up?
Within minutes a couple of ATVs arrive with BP clean up supervisors. These men gave us looks like we were the bad guys for having video cameras and recording our personal thoughts. Gregg and I laughed and walked off the beach. As we approached the road a BP truck flew up and a young tough guy jumps out and asked "Who's looking for a supervisor". We ignored him cause we didn't ask for a supervisor we asked why all these workers were sitting on their asses. Then it hit me, Yeah I would love to talk to someone in charge. I responded "Are you a supervisor" while pushing the record button on my camera. Tough Guy is quick to say "No"! At this point I am over the fake answers.
Time to gather up my crew and get ready for a day of exploring the Gulf Coast.
