Rubber Sidewalks, By Shaun Hinklein

You read correctly. Rubber sidewalks. Eliminating the concrete traditional ones we have grown to expect, rubber sidewalks have been slowly manifesting into replacing all sidewalks as their benefits have been clearly displayed over time.

Once limited to safe surfaces for playgrounds, gymnasiums, and even outdoor arenas, these structures are now being planned on replacing sidewalks in suburban communities. The new sidewalks end up preserving urban trees, reducing stormwater runoff, recycling tires, and curbing greenhouse gas emissions. The rubber can be redistributed numerous times over so endless amounts of material can be regenerated to produce more. They also lower safety hazards.

The new system also is much easier to put into place and remove making it much easier for customization to occur years later after they are implemented. For concrete sidewalks, the department of public works would have to do deface public property to find roots growing underneath the surface. With these new Rubber Sidewalks, it's as simple as isolating a panel and lifting it up to see what the situation is underneath.
